J'ai choisi cet article car bien que ce n'est pas l'unique solution au problème il s'agit d'un pas important.  Il est fait par le plus gros joueur de l'industrie, Walmart, et on peu parier que les autres vont emboîter le pas afin de ne pas lui concéder l'avantage concurrentiel du bon citoyen corporatif.

Grande victoire dans la guerre contre l'obésité menée par la première dame des États-Unis, Michelle Obama. Walmart, chef de file américain en alimentation, a annoncé hier qu'il allait réduire les prix des fruits et légumes, ainsi que diminuer les quantités de sel, de sucre et de gras trans dans ses produits d'épicerie d'ici cinq ans.

«Aucune famille ne devrait avoir à choisir entre des aliments sains et des aliments qu'elle peut se permettre d'acheter», a dit Bill Simon, président de Walmart US, devant un étal de fruits et légumes colorés. Walmart s'engage à diminuer le sel de 25%, le sucre ajouté de 10% et à retirer tout gras trans de milliers de produits d'épicerie d'ici à 2015. La firme promet aussi des économies de 1 milliard de dollars américains par an sur les fruits et légumes grâce à l'élimination «des frais inutiles dans la chaîne d'approvisionnement».

«Des initiatives comme celle-ci nous montrent que oui, nous pouvons améliorer notre façon de faire et de vendre de la nourriture dans ce pays, a déclaré Mme Obama lors de l'annonce, à Washington. Nous pouvons le faire. Et nous pouvons mieux nourrir nos enfants.»

Rien n'est prévu chez Walmart Canada

Walmart Canada n'est pas pressé d'agir. «C'est une annonce qui ne s'applique qu'aux Walmart des États-Unis, a précisé à La Presse Alex Roberton, directeur des affaires générales de Walmart pour l'est du Canada. En ce moment, on n'a rien à annoncer.» Walmart compte 323 magasins au Canada, dont 119 Supercentres avec épicerie complète. L'ouverture d'un premier Supercentre au Québec est attendue sous peu.

«Il était temps ! a réagi Paul Boisvert, coordonnateur de la chaire de recherche sur l'obésité de l'Université Laval. Espérons que le programme de Walmart US s'appliquera intégralement ici.»

Walmart compte se servir de sa lourde influence pour faire bouger l'industrie alimentaire. «On ne sait pas encore si l'initiative s'appliquera au Canada, mais nous partageons l'objectif de Walmart US d'offrir de meilleurs produits», a indiqué à La Presse Valérie Moens, porte-parole de Kraft Foods. Déjà, Kraft va diminuer de 10% la teneur en sel de tous ses produits vendus en Amérique du Nord d'ici à la fin de 2012.

The Domino Project

Book publishing is changing. It’s changing faster than it has in a hundred years. I’ve been persistent enough to be part of that change, provoking and poking and wondering about what comes next.

Today, I’m thrilled to report on what’s next for me.

• To reinvent the way books are created when the middleman is made less important.
• To reinvent the way books are purchased when the tribe is known and embraced.
• To reinvent the way books are read when the alternatives are so much easier to find.
• To find and leverage great ideas and great authors, bringing them to readers who need them.

The notion of the paper book as merely a package for information is slowly becoming obsolete. There must be other reasons on offer, or smart people will go digital, or read something free. The book is still an ideal tool for the hand-to-hand spreading of important ideas, though. The point of the book is to be spread, to act as a manifesto, to get in sync with others, to give and to get and to hand around.

Our goal is to offer ideas that people need and want to spread, to enjoy and to hold and to own, and to change conversations.
Working with a great team at Amazon, I’m launching a new publishing venture called The Domino Project. I think it fundamentally changes many of the rules of publishing trade non-fiction.
Trade publishing (as opposed to textbooks or other non-consumer ventures) has always been about getting masses of people to know about, understand and read your books. The business has been driven by several foundational principles:

1. The middleman (the bookstore) has a great deal of power. There’s only a limited amount of shelf space, and there are more books (far more books) than we have room for. No display, no sale. That’s one reason books are published with the economically ridiculous model of 100% returns from bookstores. Huge stores can carry thousands of books and return them if they don’t sell. Large chains get a say about what’s on the cover, what the title is, and they even get paid for shelf displays.

2. The audience (the reader) is largely unknown to the publisher, and thus to the author. Authors with large followings still have to start over with each book, because they don’t have permission (or the data) to contact loyal readers directly.

3. Pricing and product are static and slow. Once a book is published, the price is set forever. Add to that the glacial speed from conception to publication date and you see a system that is set up to benefit neither the publisher nor the reader.

4. Books are inherently difficult to spread. The ideas in books might travel, but the act of recommending a book, having the idea stick and a new sale get made is slow or broken. Given how important the ideas in books are, this chain has many weak links. It's worth rethinking how a publishing house could organize around its ultimate goal, which is to spread ideas.

The internet and the Kindle are changing all of these rules. The Domino Project is designed to (at least by way of example) remap many of these foundations.

1. There is no middleman. Because there is infinite shelf space, the publisher has more control over what the reader sees and how. In addition, the Amazon platform allows a tiny organization to have huge reach without taking significant inventory risk. "Powered by Amazon” is part of our name—it describes the unique nature of the venture... I get to figure out the next neat idea, and Amazon can handle printing, logistics and the platform for connection.

2. The reader is tightly connected with the publisher and the author. If you like the sort of things I write or recommend, you can sign up here (for free, using your email) and we can alert you to new works, send you free samples and otherwise make it easy for you to be smart about the new ideas that are generated. (RSS works too).

3. Pricing can vary based on volume, on timing, on format. With this project, I’ve made the decision to ignore the rules that publishers follow to get on the New York Times bestseller list. There’s no point in compromising the consumer experience or the product merely to get a nice ego boost and a small shot of promotion. More on this in a future post, but I'll let you use your imagination.

4. Digital goods and manifestos in book form make it easier to spread complex ideas. It’s long frustrated me that a blog post can reach 100 times as many people as a book, but can’t deliver the nuance a book can. The Domino Project is organized around a fundamentally different model of virality, one that allows authors to directly reach people who can use the ideas we’re writing about.

The Domino Project is named for the domino effect—ideas can quickly spread, moving through a previously static set up. Our mission isn’t to become a promotional machine, focused on interrupting large numbers of people or having significant promotional chops through traditional media. Instead, we're grabbing the opportunity to choose and deliver manifestos that are optimized for the tribe, for the small group that wants to grab them, inhale them and spread them. The good ones will spread, first from person to person, then from one circle to another, and eventually into large groups.
That’s a lot to absorb for one post. I’ve been working on the ideas behind The Domino Project since I published my very first book in 1986. The first manifestos won’t be out for a few months, but you can learn more as we go by following the Domino Project blog here.

I felt like looking a bit more into it.

Gaz de Schiste : Wo!

Voilà, je me mouille, j'ai signé et je diffuse le clip produit par des artistes d'ici afin que la pétition comporte suffisamment de noms pour que le gouvernement comprenne enfin.

Le clip en soi mérite d'être vu pour sa qualité visuelle, l'impact de son message et ... les bruits de tambour de guerre réveillant les fantômes des patriotes.  Mais au delà de tout cela, malgré mon penchant capitaliste et de droite je considère, comme la majorité maintenant, que tout ceci va trop vite.



J'ai toujours une réserve face à ces pétitions syndrome du "pas dans ma cours" qui tuent les projets de développement riches en retombées économiques au profit d'un environnementalisme dogmatique qui flirte avec l'immobilisme.  Mais le message ici, celui du clip et le mien, est simplement de prendre le temps de faire les choses correctement.

Un commentaire cependant, à propos des énergies renouvelables et le risque de perdre le focus sur leur développement en considérant les gaz de schiste : Ce n'est pas demain, ni après demain que les énergies renouvelable pourront remplacer les énergies fossiles.  En termes simples, le Québec en particulier a besoin maintenant de revenus additionnels; Les gaz de schiste pourraient faire parti de la solution à moyen terme et les énergies renouvelables feront certainement parti de la solution à long terme.  Or, pourquoi ne pas utiliser les revenus additionnels générés par l'exploitation des gaz de shiste afin d'accélérer le dévelopement de la filière "énergie renouvelable" ?

Bon, l'autre jour j'ai joué avec une jeune dame qui venait de commencer la maternelle.  Une partie de "Roche-Papier-Ciseaux" je me suis dit que c'était divertissant.  Sauf que... non seulement la jeune dame jouait avec "l'alumette" mais en plus, elle jouait à une version qui comptait aussi un "bol de toilette".  "Un bol de toilette!? qu'est-ce que ça fait là-dedans !" que je lui répondit.  Elle m'expliqua toutes les combinaisons: La roche qui brise le bol de toilette, les ciseaux qui restent pris (donc qui gagnent), le papier et l'alumette qui passent dans le drain...

Ok, j'en perdais mon latin.

C'est pourquoi j'ai décidé de faire une petite analyse matricielle afin de voir quels éléments sont plus propices à nous mener à la victoire.

Alors voici.

1- Version Roche, Papier, Ciseaux, Alumette, Bol de Toilette

On constate que la roche et les ciseaux gagnent dans 3 combinaisons, le bol de toilette dans 2 combinaisons et l'alumette ainsi que le papier, à la traîne, ne gagnent que dans une combinaison chacun.  Ce sont définitivement deux mauvais choix.

2- Version Roche, Papier, Ciseaux, Alumette (que l'on connait tous un peu mieux)

Dans ce cas, la roche et les ciseaux gagnent dans 2 combinaisons, le papier et l'alumette dans une seule combinaison chacun; encore une fois ce sont deux mauvais choix !

3- Version Roche, Papier, Ciseaux (Classique)

Là tout le monde est égal.  Une combinaison gagnante chacun.  Les concepteurs avaient bien travaillé !

Moralité, alterner entre la roche et le ciseau augmente définitivement les probabilités de succès.  J'ajouterais toutefois, basé sur mon expérience, que le joueur moyen a tendance à commencer par la roche.  Donc un début avec le papier suivi de l'alternance roche, ciseaux, ... c'est la recette du succès!

NASA photographs have revealed bright new deposits seen in two gullies on Mars that suggest water carried sediment through them sometime during the past seven years.

"These observations give the strongest evidence to date that water still flows occasionally on the surface of Mars," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program, Washington.

Liquid water, as opposed to the water ice and water vapor known to exist at Mars, is considered necessary for life. The new findings heighten intrigue about the potential for microbial life on Mars. The Mars Orbiter Camera on NASA's Mars Global Surveyor provided the new evidence of the deposits in images taken in 2004 and 2005.

"The shapes of these deposits are what you would expect to see if the material were carried by flowing water," said Michael Malin of Malin Space Science Systems, San Diego. "They have finger-like branches at the downhill end and easily diverted around small obstacles." Malin is principal investigator for the camera and lead author of a report about the findings published in the journal Science.

The atmosphere of Mars is so thin and the temperature so cold that liquid water cannot persist at the surface. It would rapidly evaporate or freeze. Researchers propose that water could remain liquid long enough, after breaking out from an underground source, to carry debris downslope before totally freezing. The two fresh deposits are each several hundred meters or yards long.

The light tone of the deposits could be from surface frost continuously replenished by ice within the body of the deposit. Another possibility is a salty crust, which would be a sign of water's effects in concentrating the salts. If the deposits had resulted from dry dust slipping down the slope, they would likely be dark, based on the dark tones of dust freshly disturbed by rover tracks, dust devils and fresh craters on Mars.

Mars Global Surveyor has discovered tens of thousands of gullies on slopes inside craters and other depressions on Mars. Most gullies are at latitudes of 30 degrees or higher. Malin and his team first reported the discovery of the gullies in 2000. To look for changes that might indicate present-day flow of water, his camera team repeatedly imaged hundreds of the sites. One pair of images showed a gully that appeared after mid-2002. That site was on a sand dune, and the gully-cutting process was interpreted as a dry flow of sand.

Today's announcement is the first to reveal newly deposited material apparently carried by fluids after earlier imaging of the same gullies. The two sites are inside craters in the Terra Sirenum and the Centauri Montes regions of southern Mars.

"These fresh deposits suggest that at some places and times on present-day Mars, liquid water is emerging from beneath the ground and briefly flowing down the slopes. This possibility raises questions about how the water would stay melted below ground, how widespread it might be, and whether there's a below-ground wet habitat conducive to life. Future missions may provide the answers," said Malin.

Besides looking for changes in gullies, the orbiter's camera team assessed the rate at which new impact craters appear. The camera photographed approximately 98 percent of Mars in 1999 and approximately 30 percent of the planet was photographed again in 2006. The newer images show 20 fresh impact craters, ranging in diameter from 7 feet (2 meters) to 486 feet (148 meters) that were not present approximately seven years earlier. These results have important implications for determining the ages of features on the surface of Mars. These results also approximately match predictions and imply that Martian terrain with few craters is truly young.

Mars Global Surveyor began orbiting Mars in 1997. The spacecraft is responsible for many important discoveries. NASA has not heard from the spacecraft since early November. Attempts to contact it continue. Its unprecedented longevity has allowed monitoring Mars for over several years past its projected lifetime.

Discovered it a while ago.
I was hooked first time I surfed it. It's fun, filled with information and the subject, even though spoiled, still it is intriguing. And not to forget, the design of the web page is awesome, it keeps your curiosity up and it's trilling to surf.
